What is Yoga all about?

Yoga is an ancient discipline which originated in India thousands of years ago. The word Yoga means “Unity” and the practice of yoga helps to create a balance or harmony between mind and body, and to induce a feeling of relaxation and calmness. By practicing different ways of moving and stretching the body and using various breathing and relaxation techniques one can improve muscle tone, flexibility and posture, as well as ease out tightness and tensions in the body and mind. In this way Yoga helps to increase energy levels and concentration, counteract the effects of stress, and enhance the overall feeling of well-being.

Yoga is completely non-competitive and is suitable for all ages and all levels of physical ability. All postures and exercises can be modified to suit particular needs. Yoga is an enjoyable and fun way to help overcome many of the problems and symptoms associated with modern lifestyles, such as sedentary work positions and hours spent sitting at computers or driving leading to aching shoulders and necks, wrist tightness and physical tension. Yoga is a very effective way to help relieve the stresses of modern day life, and partaking in a yoga class gives you a chance to switch off from rushing and racing and to have a quiet relaxed time just for you.

Many people find that regular yoga practice can help to alleviate certain conditions such as arthritis, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, migraine, insomnia and many others. It is important when choosing a yoga class that you ensure that the tutor is fully qualified and fully insured.

Classes are held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings as well as Friday mornings in the community centre. If you are interested in finding out more about yoga and think that you would like to join an upcoming class please contact Esther Wall at 021 4354391 or 087 2361759
