An Ciorcal Chomhraidh - Irish Speakers

Ciorcal Chomhraidh is a TimeBank project that has the simple objective of providing an opportunity to members of the community who wich to come together and converse in Irish. Concomitant with this aim is the provision of a facility where Irish speakers can meet and talk.

Ciorcal Chomhraidh had a humble beginning. At the first meeting, in Glounthaune Community Centre, just two people arrived. But as the weeks went by, more people began to com, and in all ten people have attended and shown interest in the project.

Meetings, or more properly get-togethers, now are held once every fortnight on Monday evenings, in Glounthaune Community Centre. Tea and biscuits are available, which helps to start the conversation, and to break the ice for newcomers. Obviously, all are welcome.

The basic aim of An Ciorcal Chomhraidh of talking to others in Irish is achieved every fortnight. While teaching the Irish language is not a function of An Ciorcal Chomhraidh, attendance by students studying Irish may benefit from being present and participating in the conversation.

The basic principle of talking in Irish is that a language lives when it is spoken.
