Little Island lady prepares to play in The Curtis Cup

Clare Coughlan, Little Island has been chosen to represent Great Britain and Ireland in the 2004 Curtis Cup, the biggest event in women's amateur golf. The Curtis Cup, officially named “The Women's International Cup” is a prestigious golf tournament in which two teams of eight amateur golfers representing either Great Britain and Ireland or United Stated of America compete. The match is conducted every two years, alternately in the US or Great Britain/Ireland. This year's competition will take place in the Formby Golf Club in Merseyside, England on 12th & 13th June.

This year's tournament is the focus of much attention as Michelle Wie, the 14 year old Hawaiian golfing wonder will join the American side. Michelle has been hailed as a female Tiger Woods and this will be her first time playing in a UK tournament.

Clare is the only Irish player on the eight woman team, although Trisha Mangan from Ennis is on the reserve panal. Clare who at 24 yrs has played internationally for a number of years has underlined her ability in match play by winning the Irish Ladies Close Championship in 1999 and reaching the semi final stage last year at Donegal. She also won the Irish Stroke Play title last year.

On behalf of the whole Parish we wish Clare the best of luck in the forthcoming Championship.
