Have you ever thought that you might like to sing in a choir or do you enjoy the music that choirs sing? Perhaps-like most people-you are reluctant to try a choir because you don’t read music. Do you think that you’re “tone deaf” or that you feel a fool if anyone heard you singing? Perhaps you’re nervous of joining any large group that’s already well established. If any of the above applies to you, then perhaps you could consider joining the choir!
Glounthaune parish choir is a very friendly and welcoming group of ordinary people. None of the members are highbrow musicians; no one can read music; no one is ever asked to sing on their own, and most members (even on a trial basis) are always very welcome. The choir exists to assist in the worship of God through music, and the members get great personal satisfaction from both this and singing in a group is a more general way. The choir rehearses, informally, in church on Wednesday evenings at 8:00pm. The choir director, Ian Sexton studied the organ scholar in Cheshire and at eighteen he was appointed organ scholar of Rochester cathedral in Kent. Ian went to trinity college in 1993 where he studied the organ continued playing and choral directing and won the coveted “Cardinal Organ Recital Prize” in 1996 at his final recital. On graduation Ian took up positions of Guinness organ scholar at Christchurch cathedral, Dublin and choirmaster at Wesley college. Ian is now assistant organist at St. Finbarres cathedral and a tutor for the department of music at UCC. He is an examiner for the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin and also for the international Baccalaureate organisation. There is also a rewarding social side to membership including trips away, dinners, guest appearances and general camaraderie. Contact Gobnait O’Flynn for further details. Tel: 021-4821747 |
